Schools in Montclair, New Jersey

PUBLIC SCHOOLS

The Montclair School District is a K-12 school district. It enrolls approximately 6,700 students. Click here to view the district narrative report card for the 2014-2015 school year.

Public schools in Montclair are part of the magnet system, which means they are meant to provide racial balance and "parental choice." This choice means parents and students can choose the magnet school theme they are most interested in and note their top selections, which are then entered into a lottery system, which uses an algorithm to assign each child to a school track. Montclair does not assign schools based on where one lives.

Examples of the themes include: science and technology, university studies, environmental studies, the arts, and global studies. Please check the theme with your prospective school as online information appears outdated. Wikipedia has a list compiled using 2011-2012 data. Similarly, the U.S. Department of Education has an elementary theme grid from 2003-2004Please note, Montclair High School is not considered a school of "choice" because it is the only high school in Montclair.

For additional information on the Montclair magnet system, click here or call the Board of Education at (973) 509-4000. For further clarification, take a look at this letter regarding school placements written by the Interim Superintendent, Ronald E. Bolandi.
